Bodies of 11 Babies Discovered in Ceiling of Closed Detroit Funeral Home

The bodies of 11 babies were discovered by state workers in the ceiling of a shuttered funeral home in Detroit Friday, authorities said.

"They're very small remains, OK," Detroit police Lt. Brian Bowser said at a Friday night news conference.

The remains were discovered in a cardboard box as well as a small casket inside a lowered ceiling at the Cantrell Funeral Home, police said. Workers went to search the shuttered funeral home after an anonymous tip was sent to the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, alerting them to teh location of where the bodies were being hidden.

A cadaver dog dispatched by the Michigan State Police went through the rest of the building and did not discover any additional bodies, police said.

"We have to find out what happened, and why it happened," Bowser said.

The former funeral home was closed several month ago after deplorable conditions were discovered there that included decomposing and moldy bodies.

The site is scheduled to be converted into a community center.
