Man jumps on wing of plane as it prepares for takeoff

A man in Nigeria's Lagos City has been arrested after he attempted to climb onto the wing of a plane as it prepared to takeoff from the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Friday morning.

The man, who has not been identified, was first spotted by the pilot, as he walked toward the plane on the runway. According to a statement from Azman Air, after the pilot saw the man on the runway, he slowed the plane down, and radioed the control tower to inform them of the man. The pilot turned off the plane's engine while the man continued wandering around the plane and officials rushed to the scene.

Footage taken by a passenger on the aircraft showed the unidentified man scramble up one of the plane's engine housings and sit on the wing as panicked passengers tell the crew to open the exit doors.

"For 30 minutes we have been stuck at the runway at MMIA by an unidentified man who ran to the aircraft with a bag. Security has not showed up and everyone is panicking. I have so many questions to ask but right now I can't even breathe," passenger Otto Orondaam wrote on Instagram.

Later, Orondaam updated his post, describing how the man was taken into custody.

"So our flight was taxing on the runway and about taking off when this man shows up running towards the moving aircraft from the bush. The pilot and a few passengers spotted him running towards the aircraft and the pilot immediately slowed down and quickly put off the engine.

"The guy approaches the plane with gloves and starts walking around and under the aircraft holding a bag which he dropped inside the engine," Orondaam wrote.

The man was taken into custody Nigeria's airport authority said in a statement. Authorities say they're investigating the unusual incident.

The flight heading for Port Harcourt in the Niger Delta was allowed to continue on to its destination after passengers disembarked for a secondary round of security checks.
