First Lady Melania Trump was both loudly cheered and booed on Tuesday by middle and high school attendees at a youth summit in the Baltimore area where she was delivering a speech as part of her 'Be Best' initiative.
According to multiple media reports, the heckling and jeers lasted for about one minute, with the audience continuing to express their displeasure during Trump's five-minute speech in the auditorium at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The first lady was addressing the students at the B'More Youth Summit on Opioid Awareness as part of her "Be Best" initiative that focuses on bullying and the dangers of opioids.
Video showed the first lady's mixed greeting as she was being introduced at the event and again as she finished her speech.
"Thank you to all of the students who are here. I am so proud of you for the bravery it takes to share that you have been strongly affected by the opioid epidemic in some way," she said above the shouts from the audience.
Trump touted her work with the 'Be Best' campaign, saying that promoting education and awareness about opioids and bullying would always be one of her "top priorities."
"I am in this fight with you and I am fighting for you. I encourage you, if you are struggling with addiction right now, reach out for support -- whether it's a teacher, parent, friend, grandparent, coach or pastor, talk to an adult in your life that you trust. It is never too late to ask for help," Trump said.
“I hope that in the days and weeks ahead, you will think about what you learned here today and consider choosing one action that could help you or someone you know struggling with addiction,” the first lady added.
The crowd talked over Trump's speech, then cheered as she left the stage once her speech was concluded. The first lady appeared to take the booing in stride, smiling and waving at the audience as she exited the stage.
The chilly reception from the crowd in Baltimore could be due to President Donald Trump's recent comments about the city, in which he referred to it as a "disgusting, rat and rodent infested mess" where "no human being would want to live."
This was the first time that First Lady Melania Trump has been booed at a solo event, however her husband, President Donald Trump, was recently booed at Game 5 of the World Series, held in Washington D.C. and again at a UFC match in New York City.
